The estate and the family

A house from the 1500s, a family since 1958, eighty hectares between Florence and Siena.

The Casa Sola farmhouse with roses

A story that grows from the land

Five centuries in one house, three generations in one family.

Casa Sola is a family winery in the San Donato in Poggio subzone, in the western part of Chianti Classico: eighty hectares between Florence and Siena, twenty of them vineyard and eight olive grove, the rest fields and woodland.

Behind every bottle there are people, choices and a vision. This page tells who we are, where we come from and where we are going.

The farmhouse: the oldest part dates from the 1500s.

Our story

Casa Sola has a deep-rooted agricultural vocation, witnessed by the old photographs found in the estate archives. The earliest traces of farming here date back to the Etruscan era, centuries before Christ.

The oldest part of the house, still visible today, dates from the 1500s: Casa Sola was then a military outpost of the Florentine militia, defending the border in the long war between Florence and Siena. The words "Popolo di Casasola" appear on a 1560 map of the Capitani di Parte Guelfa, kept in the Podesteria of Barberino Val di Pesa.

In the 1600s the farm was part of a well-organised, self-sufficient agricultural community, producing grapes and olives but also wheat and vegetables for the surrounding villages.

In 1958 the estate was bought by the family of the Counts Gambaro, who had found in Casa Sola an ideal place for holidays and rest. But Casa Sola never lost its vocation: the family's love for this place and its products drew them more and more into active farming, pouring into the wine and the oil their passion and respect for this land.

The family and the estate

Under Giuseppe Gambaro the estate saw its greatest period of development. Giuseppe took an active role in running it, working full time and bringing his managerial experience, his curiosity and his passion for good things, good wine above all.

He devoted himself to studying viticulture and oenology, looking to the great wines of Burgundy and learning new techniques and methods; he started the renewal of the vineyards, the machinery and the facilities and, with his experience in real estate, restored the estate's farmhouses, giving wine and Chianti lovers the chance to live the beauty of the place as well.

At Casa Sola it is the people, with their enthusiasm and professionalism, who have made the results of these years possible: a team that believes in the project born from Giovanni Gambaro's intuition, carried on with Giuseppe's vision and continuing today in the plans of his grandson Matteo. The growth of Casa Sola is a testament to the energy and commitment of those who look after it every day.

Matteo Gambaro, agronomist and oenologist, has led Casa Sola since 2002.

Matteo Gambaro

Wine has always been part of my family's daily life, even if during my childhood in Genoa our eyes were mostly on French wines, Burgundy in particular.

I lived Casa Sola joyfully from childhood: it was the place of holidays, freedom, open air and family, where I did my first harvests and began to fall for the world of wine. I studied Agriculture and Oenology at university, using Casa Sola as a practice ground for what I was learning; then a Master of Business Administration and a few years in a French retail multinational, as department head, buyer and category manager.

In 2002 the call of the Black Rooster and of Casa Sola became irresistible: I chose to devote myself completely to running the estate, to be a full-time winegrower. A job I love, close to nature, applying every day a responsible vision towards the environment and people.

«I can taste a wine without drinking it, but I can't drink a wine without tasting it.»Matteo Gambaro

Casa Sola today

Our identity

We are a family-run estate, a boutique winery in the heart of Chianti Classico. Our mission is to offer high-quality artisanal wines that represent, in every vintage, the elegance and the distinctive flavour of this land, with special attention to Sangiovese.

Our relationship with tradition

We work with courage, passion and consistency in search of the fullest expression of our territory, respecting the history of Chianti yet open to experimenting and taking on new projects, in a style that is "traditional and innovative".

The future of the estate

We like to see the winegrower as a guardian of the environment, a keeper of traditions and a steward of common goods: the landscape, the water, the vegetation, the whole territory. That is why we have adopted an organic approach across the entire production cycle, use only energy from renewable sources, collect rainwater for the vegetable garden and the gardens, cut emissions with lightweight glass bottles and by caring for our woods, and are committed to recycling and reducing waste.
