Casa Sola

One house, one family, a land to look after.

Casa Sola is a family winery in the San Donato in Poggio subzone, in the western part of Chianti Classico.

The oldest part of the house dates back to 1500, an outpost of the Florentine militia. Since 1958 it has been the home of the Gambaro family; since 2002 Matteo, agronomist and oenologist, has led it with a clear idea: wine begins in the vineyard, and whoever makes wine is also a keeper of the landscape, the water and the woods. Behind every bottle there are people, choices and a vision.

The land

The land is not a backdrop. It is part of the wine.

We are at 330 metres, facing south-west, on galestro alternating with clay. The Tyrrhenian breezes steady the temperatures and lengthen the ripening: harvest comes at the end of September, sometimes in October. Tap a zone on the map to find out what grows there and why.

Philosophy and cellar

Time is an ingredient.

Respect the land, interpret the wine. From vineyard to bottle we make few choices, and we explain them: they are the decisions that set Casa Sola apart.

  1. 01

    Hand harvest, late September

We wait for the Tyrrhenian breezes and fully ripe seeds. We pick into crates, plot by plot.

  2. 02

Each plot ferments on its own

Casale, Cortine, Bosco: each vineyard has its own tank. Blending comes later, once the wine has spoken.

  3. 03

Wood accompanies, it does not cover

Large casks for the Chianti Classico, 24 months for the Riserva, 30 for the Gran Selezione, five years in small casks for the Vin Santo.

The estate

Five centuries in one house.

The oldest part of Casa Sola dates from 1500, a Florentine outpost in the war with Siena. In 1958 the Gambaro family arrived: Giovanni, then Giuseppe who renewed vineyards and cellar, and since 2002 Matteo. Three generations, one vision: behind every bottle there are people, choices and a future to build.

Cercavamo un posto più autentico dopo una cantina troppo commerciale: a Casa Sola il proprietario ci ha accompagnato personalmente. Consigliatissimo.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you want to know about Casa Sola.

Where is Casa Sola and how do I get there? +

In Barberino Tavarnelle (Florence), in the San Donato in Poggio subzone of Chianti Classico: 30 km from Florence and 28 from Siena, 30-40 minutes by car. The nearest station is Poggibonsi-San Gimignano, then a short taxi ride. Private transfer on request.

How do I book a visit or a tasting? +

From the website, choosing time and seats: we confirm within one working day and send the payment link; or via WhatsApp at +39 328 9509196. Tours at 10:30, 15:30 and 17:00 (not in winter), lunch at 12:30, in small groups, in Italian and English, French on request. Reduced price for non-drinkers and for children under 12.

Do you ship wine abroad? +

Yes: Europe, the United States and other countries. Shipping is calculated at checkout by destination and number of bottles. For trade orders write to our sales office.

How should I store the bottles and how long will they age? +

In the dark, lying down, between 12 and 16 degrees, away from vibrations. Chianti Classico is at its best within 5-6 years; Riserva and Gran Selezione improve for 10-15 years in the best vintages; Vin Santo for over twenty years.

What is the difference between Chianti Classico, Riserva and Gran Selezione? +

Same appellation, three levels: the annata ages for at least 12 months; the Riserva 24; the Gran Selezione 30 and only from estate grapes. Chianti without "Classico" is a different, wider appellation. Montarsiccio and Pergliamici are IGT Toscana.
